Pearl Jewelry - The Story of Pearl Hunters

As long as pearl jewelry have been known to people, they have been a highly sought commodity for their beauty. It's only in recent times however that the industry has taken the hunt for the perfect pearl to a whole different level. Today, the shiny orbs that we see on in display in jewelry stores have actually almost always been grown in farms. That's a far cry from the dangerous extraction and collection methods used before the invention of modern technology. In the past, not more than 100 years ago, the only way to retrieve pearls was by diving in lakes, floods and the ocean to pick them up, one at the time. The unfortunate divers who'se job it was to do this, were often poor and lured by the relative large sums they could get. The diver would sometimes have to dive as deep as 100 feet on one single breath of air. In order to preserve air and to stay submerged the longest, the divers would hold on to heavy stones on the way down. Naturally, this dangerous activity was reserved for the desperate or the powerless - in many cases slaves or extremely poor peasents. Today, this method is all but obsolete in most places of the world. The cheaper cultured pearls have become popular and are many times the only pearls available to the consumer. There are however still a few isolated areas that practice this old art of pearl diving. Some of the finest natural pearl speciments come from the gulf of Bahrain. Here, divers still risk their health to retrieve what are considered the top of the crop in the world. In fact, Bahrain wants no part of the sale of cultured pearls, banned from trade. Bahrain is one of the few places on earth that does an active job in trying to preserve the natural habitat and waters from pollution. It's an interesting story and one that continues to fascinate buyers around the world. Somehow, the beauty of the pearl grows when it's been retrieved from the depth of the ocean.

Buying Pearl Jewelry Without Being Ripped Off

Buying pearl jewelry can be fun, exciting and confusing. Whether you're considering a gift of pearl jewelry for someone special or as a treat for yourself, take some time to learn the terms used in the industry. Here's some information to help you get the best quality pearl jewelry for your money, whether you're shopping in a traditional brick and mortar store or online. Pearls Natural or real pearls are made by oysters and other mollusks. Cultured pearls also are grown by mollusks, but with human intervention; that is, an irritant introduced into the shells causes a pearl to grow. Imitation pearls are man-made with glass, plastic, or organic materials. Because natural pearls are very rare, most pearls used in jewelry are either cultured or imitation pearls. Cultured pearls, because they are made by oysters or mollusks, usually are more expensive than imitation pears. A cultured pearl's value is largely based on its size, usually stated in millimeters, and the quality of its nacre coating, which give it luster. Jewelers should tell your if the pearls are cultured or imitation. Some black, bronze, gold, purple, blue and orange pearls, whether natural or cultured, occur that way in nature; some, however, are dyed through various processes. Jewelers should tell you whether the colored pearls are naturally colored, dyed or irradiated. Clams, oysters, mussels and many other mollusks with limy shells are known to produce pearls. But very few kinds yield gem pearls of jeweler's quality. The pearl is an abnormal growth of mother-of-pearl, or nacre, imbedded in the soft bodies of these shellfish. It is built up, layer upon layer, in the same way as nacre is added to the lining of the growing shell and always has the same color and luster. For example, over the country, hundreds of good-sized pearls are found each year in the oysters we eat. Unfortunately these have no commercial value regardless of whether they have been cooked or not because they are dull opaque white or purple like the shell of the parent oyster. In recent times almost all pearls of gem quality come from the oriental pearl oyster which has a bright shimmering translucent nacre. A pearl starts growing when some irritating foreign substance such as a sand grain, bit of mud, parasite or other object becomes lodged in the shell-producing gland called the mantle. Pearls formed in the soft flesh where nacre can be added on all sides are most likely to be spherical and the most highly prized. By far the great majority are flattened or variously distorted and have little value. Size, color, luster and freedom from flaws are other essential qualities. Unlike other gems, such as diamonds, pearls have an average life of only about 50 years. In time the small amount of water in a pearl's make-up is lost and its surface cracks. Because they are mostly lime, necklaces which are worn often are injured by the acid secretions of the human skin.

freshwater pearl

The good news is that it is not difficult or expensive to maintain this beauty. You will find that a lot of freshwater pearl the ingredients that I suggest, you probably already have in the house or can easily be purchased at any grocery or convenience store and you won't break your wallet.

I have found that when you wear crystals on a daily basis they tend to lose a little bit of their luster. Let's face it, the reason why we choose Swarovski is because they are top of the line. There is nothing in the freshwater pearl jewelry market that will catch your eye and sparkle quite like a Swarovski crystal.

But if you wear crystals over a period of time you may find that they appear to be a little bit dull, not quite as bright as the cultured pearl jewelry day that you brought them home. I am going to talk about 2 very simple and inexpensive solutions that you can do at home to keep the brilliance in the jewelry that you love so much.

Most of the things that will take away from the beauty of a crystal are from everyday activities that most women do to take care of ourselves. Hairspray, lotions, make-up, and even oils from our skin can sit on the surface of each facet and mute the brilliance that really makes Swarovski crystal jewelry so unique.

are childen's books

Are children*s books sometimes scarier than the ones intended for adults? When it comes to prolific fantasy fiction writer Neil Gaiman, this may just be the case. His latest children*s book, the Newbury Award winning The Graveyard Book, begins with a gruesome multiple murder 每 luckily, his readers are spared the details, with only just enough information given to entice and excite, rather than repulse. A mysterious and decidedly creepy man sneaks into a family home and murders three of the family of four. Only the toddler manages to escape by mere chance 每 he happens to wander out of the house while his family is being methodically killed, unaware and innocent. The &the man Jack* (could there have been a creepier and more alienating name for a villain?) follows the child*s scent into a graveyard but is unable to find him there 每 it seems the inhabitants of the graveyard have chosen to adopt the baby boy and keep him safe. And so begins the cultured pearl jewelry story of Nobody Owes in The Graveyard Book.

Bod, as he is affectionately called by the various ghosts who reside in the graveyard, is given the &Freedom of the Graveyard* and he learns from his strange, otherworldly family 每 whether its learning to &Fade* from other human eyes, how to call for help in the language of the night-gaunts from his strange tutor Miss Lupescu, or how to recognize a hellmouth. Of course, these pearl necklace lessons all prove to be extremely helpful when Bod becomes entangled in various escapades connected to the graveyard, but the ghosts 每 however experienced they may have been in their previous lives每 are unable to equip him to deal with the real world.

The book essentially consists of a number of episodic adventures Bod has living in the graveyard 每 not all of them are connected to each other and each chapter is strong enough to read as single short story. These adventures are ultimately a mere distraction from the real issue at hand. The mysterious man Jack and the even more mysterious Convocation are out there, looking for Bod. Why is he so important to them? And to what lengths will they go to achieve their purpose? Gaiman gives us a coming of age story with fears so classic every reader will relate to them, and wonders so charming they clearly prove Gaiman*s imagination to be rich far beyond even that of his Sandman comic books.

Many parents may suspect The Graveyard Book to be frightening for young children, with its premise of murder and mayhem. But if The Graveyard Book is frightening, then how is Rudyard Kipling*s The Jungle Book not so? Gaiman credits Kipling*s Mowgli stories as a strong influence on the graveyard book (clear even from the title), and it is interesting to see that while people may find the thought of a young child being raised by a motley crew of ghosts in a graveyard disturbing, the same people may never have thought twice about Mowgli being raised by a wild bear, a melanistic panther and a giant tree python. Yes, there is death in The Graveyard Book每 but as The Guardian pointed out, isn*t there death in most children*s stories? An orphan can not be an orphan without at least two dead people.

Diana Wynne Jones is quoted on the cover of The Graveyard Book as saying that this & is the best book Neil Gaiman has ever written*. This is, technically, all you need to know to want to read this book. Not just does Gaiman has some exceptional work in his forte, but more importantly, Jones herself is a truly brilliant and iconic writer of children*s and young adult literature. Other than Kipling, Gaiman credits Jones* Eight Days of Luke as a strong guide for his writing of The Graveyard Book, and any writer who knows that Diana Wynne Jones is a force to reckon with in the genre of young adult literature has clearly understood pearl earrings  the demands of the genre itself.
More so than the nature of fear, Gaiman pays homage to Kipling in his treatment of the trials and triumphs of growing up and his brilliantly paced narrative, with its perfectly timed emotion, adventure, capture, escape, thoughtfulness and humor. The Graveyard Book is delightful and sad at the same time 每 it*s a precise and appropriately dark little tale that is just as strong as any of Gaiman*s more popular work. It is emotionally honest, well written and a sheer pleasure to read. It*s a wonderful metaphor for growing yup and a wonderful story even on the surface.

Little bee is an African

Little bee is an African refugee who has escaped a potentially gruesome death in the Nigerian oil wars. She steals away to England where she spends 2 years in a detention centre, whiling away her time by practicing her English and trying to learn about the ways of England. She says, "Excuse me for learning your language properly. I am here to tell you a real story. I did not come here to talk to you about the bright African colours." And so begins the story of two women, their fates irrevocably tied together, bound wholesale turquoise jewelry by one single act of violence. They must help each other to help themselves 每 if they can.

Chris Cleave*s The Other Hand has been getting rave reviews 每 it*s the book Madonna has been reading, if you need any further proof of its popularity. The book has dual narratives 每 one of the Ibo refugee girl who calls herself Little Bee, and the other of a trendy fashion magazine editor whose life has taken on a whole less meaning than she intended it to. She and her husband have grown apart, and she begins an absolutely pointless affair with a random Home Office official. The husband finds out and they attempt to fix their flagging relationship with a holiday to Nigeria, where, on a beach one night, they first meet Little Bee and a band of mercenaries with murder on their minds. What happens on this beach is described in a scene that left me quite cold 每 in that it was affective and resolute in its horror. While it leaps off the page in its horror, Cleave*s asks the question: if you could save the life of another human being by just giving up a single digit, a single finger 每 would you?

It is not a spoiler to talk about the turquoise jewelry fact that one of the 2 protagonists of The Other Hand lacks a middle finger on one hand. Early in the novel, the English protagonist, Sarah, says "It started on the day we first met Little Bee, on a lonely beach in Nigeria. The only souvenir I have of that first meeting is an absence where the middle finger of my left hand used to be. The amputation is quite clean. In place of my finger is a stump, a phantom digit that used to be responsible for the E, D and C keys on my laptop." And so the reader knows what has happened 每 or thinks they do, and it is enough to draw you in, and keep you there.

Cleave manages to write 2 very distinct narrative voices with great alacrity. I personally found both voices pretty believable 每 in fact, they were very authentic in their femaleness 每 so much so that I wasn*t even aware that Chris Cleave was a man. In fact the voices of the women are more believable to me than those of the men. I quite liked The Other Hand on the first reading 每 it is only on second thought that one sees any holes in the fabric of the novels believability, which, however, does not take away from this being a decently written book. My main contention with it is the lack of believability of the extra marital affair that results in the trip to Nigeria 每I*d go as far as saying that any turquoise necklace other reason to travel to Africa could have been stuck in there, and would work just as well. The affair itself is insipid and absolutely unnecessary. But then again, aren*t most affairs of the sort just that?
It is not highly introspective, it is not deeply philosophical, it is not very complex in language or structure, but rather, it is simply written, sensitive and effective. For those of you who do not want to be dragged into a great debate on the human condition, or an extended look at the torments of the tortured soul, The Other Hand is a good, steady read with the right amount of humour, candour and food for thought. If at all it seems melodramatic, as the Guardian review says, that is a fault Cleave shared with Dickens, and for the same reason. He means it.
